Divorced and retired, Tony leads a reclusive and relatively quiet life. One day he learns that his university girlfriend, Veronica, has acquired a diary kept by his best friend, who dated her after she and Tony split up. Tony’s quest to recover the diary forces him to revisit his past. As he digs deeper, it starts to come back: first love, broken heart, deceit, regrets, guilt... Can Tony bear to face the truth and take responsibility for the devastating consequences of actions he took so long ago?

'Jim Broadbent gives a droll, well-judged performance in this adaptation of Julian Barnes’ Booker-winner, about a blast from the past of a grumpy divorcee.'

Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
